3 Rules to Remember in Social Media Marketing

It’s no secret that social media is an important part of digital marketing. There are millions of social media users all over the world and many businesses have found social media marketing to be a key to their success. There is a lot to say on the subject of social media but today we’re focusing on three of the most important things to remember when using social media to market your business.

1. Be consistent

Social media is not a silver bullet. You cannot just create a page and expect fans and sales to start pouring in, especially in this crowded market space. You also can’t post once every six months and expect to get anything out of your social media efforts. You have to be consistent in your posting. This is one of the most overlooked components of social media marketing. Create a posting schedule and follow it! You wouldn’t keep different hours or only open your brick and mortar business when you feel like it so try to use the same approach in social media. Consistency shows that you care and you are invested in your social media. Your community will appreciate that and pay you back for it.

2. You don’t have to be everywhere, all of the time

Many people suffer from social media overwhelm, meaning they see all of the possibilities and want to be on all of the platforms. The problem with this is it’s almost impossible to keep up with all of the social media platforms and still run your business successfully. You will more than likely not be able to keep up trying to juggle it all and social media will be the first to be dropped (see point #1). The important thing is knowing where your audience is and you can do that by knowing your customers, which you already do!

3. It’s part of a strategy, not a complete strategy

Social media will help your business. It can bring you new customers, create loyal followers, increase sales and help you gain traction in your communities. But it is has to be part of a bigger digital strategy, whether that includes mobile, your website or SEO. Use social media as a connector to other parts of your marketing plan and it will do it’s job just don’t believe it’s the only part of your marketing plan.
